Is a Netbook really better than a Tablet?

A while back I wrote a blog relating to why netbooks are better than an ipad and I really meant it then.   They key word in the previous sentence is "then".    Over time I have started to change my mind and I really don't know anymore.   I have used ipads and really like them and with the ability to use a bluetooth keyboard they aren't bad for doing simple documents and email.

Anyway. . . I have broken down and am buying an ipad 2 .   I ordered it a couple weeks ago and it should be here this month. . . I will fill you in on how I like it.

I also purchased a Xoom Android tablet and have since returned it.   I liked it but it is too much like a version 1, there are very few apps available and the UI is a little quirky but it wasn't bad.   But for now, I am going with an ipad 2.   Here is an article about all the tablets coming, , ,  the tablet wars are on for 2011.     http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Mobile-and-Wireless/Apple-iPad-2-Spring-Launch-is-Bad-for-Android-Honeycomb-Tablets-164131/?kc=EWWHNEMNL03032011STR2

What are your feelings about tablets?    Do you have one?    Will they replace netbooks?    (BTW, I am doing this blog on a netbook )

Correlation of Music and IT

From the early days of AppDev when first going to IT conferences to today it has always seemed that  many IT professionals were also musicians .  I would love to take a poll and find out what percent of geeks are also musicians. . . and how that differs from the general population.

At Dev Connection conferences or VBITS (long ago) or Tech Ed there were always well known geeks playing in jam sessions ,  and many of them were very good.  I have always wondered why is there a connection .   Is it that Development is an art and music is an art and that is why there is a connection?   Is it that developers brains are wired in a certain way that linked with music?

Well, my questions have finally been answered in the InfoWorld article linked below.    It is a short article and interesting, enjoy.

Tech Trends for 2011

I read an article today at Information Week that gives some good insight into the important tech trends in 2011.  A couple of the items are no brainers but some are interesting for the future.

The top tech trends identified were:

·         Innovation is key.

·         Business data is critical

·         Maintenance fees is a point of contention.

·         Enterprise 2.0 is a concept/way of thinking.

·         The internet is making us stupid.

Will an iPad become a replacement for your notebook?

A few weeks ago I wrote about why netbooks are better than ipads. . . there was a fair number of reviews on this so there must be some interest in iPads <no kidding!>.

I continue to wonder if I would enjoy an ipad, they do have a "cool factor" and almost seem like you are a member of the cult if you own one, however I always wonder why would I want another "gadget" that isn't needed.   I have two laptops, two desktops, a kindle , a zune , a netbook and on and on. . . so I think I would get an iPad if I could get rid of something.   I finally found a review that cements the fact for me that I will not get an iPad.

Developer Skills in Demand

There are many opinions whether the economy is getting better or not.    Even if the job market is not good make sure to stay on top of your game by learning the hottest technologies.   In an article in eWeek it states that demand for C#, Java/J2EE, .Net, Oracle, Sharepoint and SAP skills are very high, according to a July report from IT job board Dice, which surveyed recruiters and human resource professionals.    You will be well served to learn or update your knowledge in the above  technologies.

10 reasons a netbook is better than an ipad

I have to admit , the ipad has a "cool factor" .    I don't know of anyone that has one that does not like it , , , only die hard PC users tend to not get excited about it.   Even one of our Experts, Ken Getz, is a MAC user and if he doesn't have an ipad likely will get one (Ken, you should weigh in on this one) .

This blog is done for all you ipad users to let you know that the ipad isn't that cool, that the netbook actually rules. . . it is also done for you "non-ipaddies" that need some encouragement to not drink the ipad kool-aid, also may help you non-ipad people build up your self esteem when you aren't holding a cool ipad.    I read an article that identifies the 10 reasons the netbook is better than an ipad and the link to it is below .

http://www.channelinsider.com/c/a/Spotlight/10-Reasons-Why-A-Netbook-Is-A-Better-Choice-Than-An-iPad-396227/?kc=EWWHNEMNL06082010STR1

How many of you are ipad users?    Do any of you that have one dislike it?   Why?

Computer Science hiring to increase in last half 2010

In the last half of 2010 the hiring of personnel in the Computer Science and Math Science is expected to be at the highest level since October 2008.   Read the short article at http://www.eweek.com/c/a/IT-Management/Hiring-Expected-to-Be-Robust-in-Second-Half-of-2010-369995/?kc=EWKNLCSM06082010STR3

One quote in the article that bodes well for those IT professionals that are up to date with current technologies is :   "There is a host of other good news to report in the Dice Survey: Salaries for new hires are rising for 25 percent of respondents; Nearly 70 percent of those polled do not expect layoffs to occur; Recruiting for new hires is at 20 percent compared to 9 percent in the fall of 2009."

"Got Office 2010 ? "

I have heard many  opinions about whether companies will upgrade to Microsoft Office 2010 or not.    Many talk about the fact that it is a must upgrade because of the integration of Office 2010 with Sharepoint 2010 and Windows7. . . but what if you don’t need this integration.

During this economy and with companies holding  their money tightly there needs to be compelling reasons to upgrade to Office 2010.

According to an article from  InfoWorld there are compelling reasons to use Office 2010.   Read the article at the below link and find out if there are reasons your company will want Office 2010.

Many have just upgraded to the last version of Office, I have.    I have not been too excited about going to the next version soon until I read the article below.   There are some compelling reasons to upgrade.    Read the attached article and then decide.

Will you use SharePoint 2010?

Sharepoint 2010 was launched this week without much fanfare, , , why is that?    From customers we have talked with they are excited to learn more about this version and are planning to implement or move to it in the near future.   Do any of you have opinions on why the launch was relatively quiet within the tech channel in general?

There is a slide deck on Infoworld that identifies the 10 things to love about Sharepoint 2010, check it out at http://www.infoworld.com/d/applications/10-things-we-love-about-sharepoint-2010-618?source=IFWNLE_nlt_daily_2010-05-14   .

Please after reading this reply with whether you will be moving to 2010:

(1) already have,    (2) within six months   (3)six to eighteen months    (4) no interest / never
